Hardware wallets for creators
For people who might get paid in Bitcoin, or hold some savings off an exchange. Three official stores: Ledger, Trezor, BitBox. High-level differences only. No invented firmware versions, no fake spec sheet, no test-lab scores.

Use. A hardware wallet keeps private keys on a device that signs offline. It does not fix a photographed seed phrase, a phishing site, or sending coins to the wrong network. Buy from the official store, not a marketplace listing.
Multi-coin, consumer kit
Ledger

- Recovery is a 24-word phrase. Ledger’s own site warns they will never ask for it.
- Multi-coin by design. Their store talks about thousands of assets and a companion app (Ledger Wallet).
- Secure Element plus a proprietary OS. Closed-source signing firmware is the usual trade vs Trezor’s open-source pitch.
- Optional Ledger Recover exists as a vendor product. It is a choice, not a requirement.
- Beginner path: retail presence, several device shapes, an app that tries to be the whole desk.
Open source, original brand
Trezor

- Trezor’s pitch is 100% open-source code and design, plus a recovery phrase you can restore onto another Trezor.
- They sell multi-coin devices and Bitcoin-only SKUs (listed on trezor.io). Use Bitcoin-only if you will not hold other coins.
- Backup culture includes paper or metal. They sell metal backup plates, including multi-share kits. That is Shamir-style splitting, not a microSD card.
- Companion app is Trezor Suite. Power users care about being able to read the firmware. Beginners still get a setup wizard.
Swiss, Bitcoin-only option
BitBox

- Swiss-made. Open-source firmware plus a secure chip (their dual-chip story since 2019).
- Backup on a microSD card is the distinctive move: restore without typing words. Recovery words are still optional.
- Bitcoin-only edition and Multi edition. The Bitcoin-only firmware is for people who will not hold other coins.
- Smaller catalog than Ledger. Companion app is BitBoxApp. A better fit if you wanted less product around the vault.
Honest differences, not a scorecard
Seed backup style is the one you will feel on day one. Ledger and Trezor start from words on paper (or metal). BitBox will also write an encrypted backup to a microSD card that restores onto another BitBox. Words still exist if you want them.
Bitcoin-only vs multi-coin is a threat-model choice, not a lifestyle brand. BitBox and Trezor both sell Bitcoin-only devices. Ledger’s store is built around a large multi-coin catalog. If you only receive Bitcoin, a Bitcoin-only firmware is less code in the device. If you also hold other coins, you need a multi-coin device or a second wallet.
Open source is Trezor’s long reputation and BitBox’s firmware claim. Ledger’s Secure Element story is the opposite bet: a certified chip and a proprietary OS you do not audit yourself. Neither camp gets to call the other fake. You are picking which trust story you can live with.
Beginner vs power user is mushy. Ledger is the one a non-technical client has heard of. Trezor is the one people buy when they want to verify. BitBox sits in the “fewer features, Swiss vault” lane. Current model names and screens change. Check the official comparison pages before you pay.

Should a creator keep Bitcoin on an exchange?
An exchange is a custodian. A hardware wallet holds keys offline on a device you control. That is the usual reason to buy one if payments or savings in Bitcoin are more than pocket change. This page is not financial advice.
Which of the three should I buy?
Ledger if you want the consumer multi-coin kit and their app. Trezor if open-source firmware and a Bitcoin-only SKU matter more. BitBox if you want Swiss dual-chip hardware, a microSD backup, and a Bitcoin-only edition. Confirm current models on the official sites. Dated August 2026.
